Abbeyfield Golden Bay is located in the vibrant town of Takaka, a popular tourist destination, and is a 10-minute walk from the shops, cinema and numerous cafes. The house is set well back from the road and is next to Lake Killarney, a scenic reserve.
The single-storey house has 11 studio units and was purpose-built by the community in 2008. There is also a self-contained guest room and a self-contained flat for the resident housekeeper.
Each studio unit has a small enclosed garden, and most units face north so get plenty of sunlight. They are fitted with heat pumps and each contains a small kitchenette for making hot drinks, with space for a small fridge.
The open plan dining room/lounge overlooks Lake Killarney, and residents can watch the ever-changing wildlife on the lake, locals walking on the walkway or feeding the ducks, while relaxing. The lounge can be curtained off in winter to keep it cosy.
There is ample parking for residents’ vehicles and storage for mobility scooters and bikes. Residents without transport can use the local Wrinkles Express transport service, which for a small donation will take them to medical appointments in Takaka or Nelson.
The house is managed by the dedicated volunteers of Abbeyfield Golden Bay.
