In 2001 the Friends of Rotoiti was formed as a partnership between a motivated group of locals and the Department of Conservation to enhance the work being done in the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project mainland island by controlling introduced pests – stoats, rats, possums, wasps and feral cats. The friends build, set and monitor traps lines, conduct wasp and stoat bait trials and assist with lizard and robin monitoring.
Our volunteers are local residents or members who travel from Nelson or Blenheim (one hour drive each way) to monitor trap lines, attend training meetings and carry out trap box maintenance and/or construction. Many of our original members are still very active in the group. If you are interested in helping in the war against introduced pests, we would love to hear from you.
