The Nelson Jazz Club Big Band – styled after the great bands of the Forties and Fifties. A traditional stage band that plays syncopated written arrangements with improvised interludes. Most people will be familiar with Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, but Big Bands have been popular since the dawn of jazz and show no sign of losing their appeal, with new arrangements of contemporary music appearing all the time.
The Nelson Jazz Club Big Band consists of four sections: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section; and includes some of the best Jazz players and vocalists currently in Nelson. We also aim to provide tutorship with youth players to build their confidence and performance repertoire.
We meet every Monday Night at 7pm – 9pm to rehearse, and we aim to have around 4 to 7 gigs per year, including a trip to the Christchurch Big Band Festival.
Membership is $20 per year for adults. Free for Students.
