Vigil Mass on the second Saturday each month at 5pm

First Parish Priest Fr Garin S.M. laid the foundation stone and said first Mass under temporary shelter on the site, on October 10, 1869.  56,000 Ft of Totora and Rimu pit sawn timber was supplied by Mr Joseph Hoult and the Wakefield Catholic families provided funds and materials.  Fr P Chareyre S.M. was the Spiritual Director and also designed the altar.  The committee was chaired by Mr Thomas O’Shea, Mr Joseph Hoult as treasurer, with Messrs. James Arnold, Edwin Fowler, Joseph Tomlinson, Joseph Bolton and Joseph Hoult jr.  The committee added a vestry.  The architect Mr R Stewart provided a gilded cross to top the spire.  The Church was blessed and officially opened by Fr Garin S.M. on the 7th May, 1870 on his 60th birthday – 250 people attended.
